Let’s explore Pittsburgh, one street at a time.
What if “street photography” meant something a tiny bit different? What if we weren’t focused on shooting from the hip and capturing quick-moving scenes with a sense of anonymity? What if we were more concerned with noticing the details, sounds, lighting, and feelings found on one particular street?
Open to anyone willing to shoot some film, this straight-forward project will begin with an assigned street name. From there, you choose the camera, film, and the style of shooting: one walk, multiple walks at the same time of day, a drive at night, etc. The only rule is that you STAY ON ONE STREET, capturing only the details and essence found there. Dig deep or stay on the surface. Say hello to a new or familiar part of the burgh. :)
All participants are responsible for their own purchase of film and developing, and if interested in participating in next steps*, photos must be submitted by March 31 at midnight. Submitting entire rolls is recommended.
*We hope to compile selections of each roll into a fun city map and zine series (this round of submissions will go into Volume II.) This will be optional for anyone participating in the overall project, but it is encouraged as a way to see your photos go a little further!
The fine print? While not required, ESP carries many film stocks, both 35mm and 120/color and B&W. We are happy to sell one to you, or you can purchase your own elsewhere. You are absolutely allowed to share a roll with someone or with your child if that’s more fitting for you. Similarly to selling film, development and scanning are available at ESP, but you are of course permitted to have this serviced anywhere. If you use our lab, you still must have your photos done by the deadline of March 31, so please allow up to one week for development and turnaround.
Volume II assignments have closed! Look for more in the future :)
